EVE Power to Build Green Energy Plant to Supply BMW Electric Cars in Hungary

May 09,2023

-       The factory will be a major supplier to the BMW Group Debrecen plant

Budapest, 9 May 2023 – EVE Power, a leading global lithium cell manufacturer, will build a new environmentally friendly battery plant in Debrecen, Hungary, to supply battery cells for electric cars for a to-be-built production facility for BMW Group on a 45-hectare site. The factory will be built close to Debrecen, in the North-West Economic Belt, on land provided for suppliers.

The state-of-the-art factory will use modern technology to produce cylindrical batteries for the automotive industry, with a total capacity of 28 GWh per year. The project, valued at over 1 billion Euros, will employ over 1000 people, and is set to be completed in 2026.

Premium cars require premium battery cells, which EVE Power’s world-leading technology will provide for the electric cars produced by BMW Group in Debrecen.

“Our company has 22 years of experience in battery cell manufacturing. For us, research and development of innovative high-tech solutions has always been more important than growth, thus R&D accounts for 8% of our turnover. Our technologies are developed by our own researcher engineers, so we will bring world-class knowledge to Debrecen. We also want to share this knowledge with local technical and engineering universities and be a useful and a reliable member of the local community.” said Alexander Holden, Senior Vice President of EVE Power.

The factory will use AI and machine learning-based systems to produce lithium cylindrical battery cells with top-quality assurance. The plant will use purified wastewater and surface water, recycled on-site for reduced water demand. Purified wastewater and surface water will cover 95% of the investment’s water demand while the remaining 5% is going to be ensured from potable water for communal needs such as drinking water.  Solar power and energy storage systems will be used for efficient energy usage, and carbon emissions will be continuously controlled. EVE Power aims to have suppliers produce battery components, such as cathode precursors and anodes, with green electricity in the long term.

 Where innovations meet

EVE Power will produce a new type of high-performance 46mm diameter cylindrical battery cells for BMW electric cars that are smaller, lighter, and 20% denser than current models, increasing battery range by up to 30%. The charging speed of these 6th-generation batteries will also be increased by up to 30%.

“We are delighted that the BMW Group and EVE Power are expanding their successful cooperation,” said Dr. Joachim Post, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network. “In line with our local by local principle, the BMW Group aims to buy battery cells for its electric vehicles where production takes place. The proximity between our new BMW iFactory and the new EVE Energy facility will be a decisive factor for sustainable vehicle production in Debrecen.”
